Mass-balance calculations indicate that intense weathering has resulted in the depletion of Si and many alkali and alkaline-earth elements, whereas Al, Fe, Ti, U, Nb, V, and REE have been enriched. The results indicate that Al- and Ti-bearing phases, Fe and Mn oxides and hydroxides, clay minerals, phosphate minerals, and weathering-resistant minerals may play a controlling role in the fixation and concentration of trace elements in the ores. The enrichment of REE(La–Lu) in all subunits and their association with Fe oxides and hydroxides and phosphate minerals confirm the potential role of these mineral phases in the fixation and concentration of these elements. Overall, the geochemical pattern of the Kaltakeh bauxite deposit may reflect the interplay of intense weathering, leaching of mobile elements, remobilization and re-fixation of elements, formation of organic complexes, changes in the pH of weathering solutions, and fluctuations in redox conditions during the evolution of the Kaltakeh profile.
