In this study, the electronic structure and coordination environment of an iron oxide catalyst deposited on an ITOP transparent conducting substrate for the water oxidation reaction (WOR) were investigated. These cost-effective and stable electrodes were prepared via electrochemical deposition and subsequently activated in an alkaline medium. Cyclic voltammetry assessments revealed a significant enhancement in catalytic activity after two hours of operation, indicating the occurrence of structural transformations during the catalytic process. To elucidate this phenomenon, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XANES/EXAFS) was employed. XANES results demonstrated that the average oxidation state of iron (approximately 2.9) remains unaltered post-reaction; however, EXAFS analysis confirmed a rearrangement within the local structure of the Fe–O bonds. Consequently, the enhanced catalytic activity of these electrodes is attributed not to a shift in the oxidation state, but directly to localized modifications in the oxygen coordination environment surrounding the iron atoms.
