Garnet is a characteristic mineral of metamorphic and skarn rocks and provides valuable information on the physicochemical conditions and processes of their formation. In this study, metamorphic garnets from the Kuh-e Tembur area in the Sanandaj–Sirjan Zone and skarn garnets from the Zandabad area in the Ahar–Arasbaran Zone were compared in terms of mineralogical, textural, and geochemical characteristics. Field and petrographic studies, SEM, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, and ICP-MS analyses were conducted. Skarn garnets mainly occur as massive aggregates and garnetite and are associated with metasomatic processes, whereas metamorphic garnets occur as coarse-grained porphyroblasts containing quartz, tourmaline, and sillimanite inclusions. Metamorphic garnets have more homogeneous textures and almandine–pyrope compositions, whereas skarn garnets show more heterogeneous textures and Ca-rich compositions, particularly grossular–andradite. Distinct REE patterns further distinguish the two groups, indicating magmatic–hydrothermal fluids and metasomatism in skarn garnet formation, and growth and recrystallization during regional metamorphism in metamorphic garnets during regional metamorphism.
