The Zagros ophiolitic complexes are part of the Alpine–Himalayan belt, formed by Neo-Tethys closure and Arabian–Eurasian collision. The NW Piranshahr ophiolite lies at the NW end of the Zagros zone along the Neo-Tethys suture. We evaluated the chromitization potential of its peridotites using ASTER image processing, verified by chromian spinel and olivine chemistry and whole-rock geochemistry. Peridotites include serpentinized dunite, serpentinized harzburgite, and serpentinite. Serpentinized dunites have chromian spinel with Cr# 0.62–0.63, Mg# 0.49–0.53, TiO₂ <1 wt.%, and Cr/Al >1, comparable to suprasubduction zone (SSZ) peridotites and podiform chromitites. In contrast, harzburgites and serpentinites lack such characteristics. ASTER processing successfully discriminated serpentinized ultramafic zones from other lithologies. Prospective chromitization zones were evaluated by integrating remote sensing data with field evidence, mineral chemistry, and whole-rock geochemistry. This combined approach provides an effective method for preliminary chromitization assessment, particularly in areas with limited accessibility.
