The behavior of rare earth elements (REE) in carbonate rocks can provide valuable information on the composition of the initial fluid, the contribution of non-carbonate phases, and post-depositional alterations. In this research, the distribution and fractionation of REE and the factors controlling their behavior in the carbonate rocks of the Ruteh Formation in the Barouq area, northwestern Iran, were investigated through an integrated approach combining petrographic, mineralogical, and geochemical data. The PAAS-normalized REE patterns are characterized by LREE enrichment, a gradual decrease in abundance from LREE to HREE, and distinct fractionation between these two groups of lanthanides. Strong positive correlations between REE and Al₂O₃, SiO₂, TiO₂, K₂O, P₂O₅, Cu, U, Zr, Hf, Rb, Th, and Sc (r > 0.85), together with a negative correlation with CaO (r = −0.62), suggest that the distribution of lanthanides was predominantly influenced by detrital materials and non-carbonate phases.
